New Asphalt Driveway? 3 Tips To Keep It Looking Good

by Jennifer Fernandez

If you have a brand new asphalt driveway, you can keep it looking like new longer if you follow the below tips. This will save you money and time because you will not have to worry about cleaning it as often, making repairs, or hiring someone to make the repairs for you.

Watch For Trees

If you are planning to plant a new tree, some trees have very aggressive roots and should not be planted near your new driveway. If these roots find their way under your driveway, they can cause the pavement to crack and lift. Some trees with shallow roots that you should avoid planting include the red maple, sugar maple, sweet gum, cottonwoods, poplars, willows, and elm.

Some trees that work well near driveways include:

  • Dogwoods: Flowers in the spring
  • Purple plums: Beautiful purple foliage
  • Crape myrtle: Blooms from spring through fall
  • Birch: Beautiful colored bark

You should also watch for trees that drop litter on your driveway, such as seedpods, seed cones, nuts, fruits, and leaves. Some trees you should avoid for this reason include the tulip tree, magnolia, and the pin oak tree.

Seal Your Driveway

To keep your asphalt driveway from cracking, you should put a sealant on it. During the summer, the sun's heat can dry out the surface of your driveway and cause it to oxidize, which leads to hairline cracks on the surface. If these cracks are not taken care of, weeds can force their way through and cause cracks to widen. Water getting through the cracks in the winter will freeze, and cause them to expand. Sealing your driveway can stop all of this from happening. You can purchase sealant at home supply stores and seal it yourself, if you prefer. If you do, clean and fill the cracks first, and then follow the directions on the sealant to apply it to the driveway. If this gets too much for you, call professionals like K-W Cornerstone Paving Services.

Keep Neighborhood Dogs Off at Night

If you have dogs in your neighborhood, they may poop or pee on your driveway. While this does not cause damage, you will have to clean it up.

Motion detector lights work well for this. Having a light come on when the animal approaches may make them run away

When choosing motion detector lights you will notice infrared, ultrasonic, or dual technology. Infrared sensors are activated by movement, such as when an animal walks in front of it. This works well for small spaces, such as around trash bins. Ultrasonic motion detector lights uses sound patterns to detect a moving object. Dual technology motion detector lights use both infrared and ultrasonic.

Choose lights that allow you to adjust how bright you want the light to be. They should have two bulbs in case one of the bulbs goes out.

Perform maintenance on your driveway every three to five years to maximize its life expectancy by cleaning, fixing any small cracks, and sealing it.

About Me

creating a patio that you love

The patio that was behind my house when we bought our house four years ago was in terrible condition. The previous owner seemed to have installed patio stones himself and didn't do a very good job doing so. The stones were all cracked and uneven and made it difficult to enjoy the little time that I did spend out there. I decided that the old patio had to go and that I would have a new patio professionally installed. If you are considering a new paved patio, visit my site. There, you will find several great ideas that can help you create the patio that you love spending time on.
