Educating and Electing Judges

January 14th, 2007

The Williams Institute educates judges around the country on issues affecting sexual minorities, i.e. GLBT issues. Its judicial training program provides state and federal judges with substantive training on legal issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Heaven knows judges needed some educating as very few state and federal judges have expertise on these issues.  If the gay community wants to continue to make progress then we need to make sure that Judges get the training and education they need so that they can make informed decisions on the GLBT issues.  Check out their website here to read more about this great organization that is helping our cause.  They need financial support and the Gill Foundation will match any donations from new donors, up to a total of $50,000.  If you can help them out please give what you can. Thanks for considering this. ChicoMax will continue to bring the LGBT community information about allies that are helping us to win the battle for full equality under the law that we are entitled to as citizens of the United States.

In Philadelphia we have Attorney Dan Anders running for Common Pleas Court judge.  The time has come for our community to elect one of our own.  We will be doing an in depth article on Dan for our blog in next few weeks.

The key to progress is to educate judges and attorneys and elect members of our community to all levels of elected office.  We can force change faster if we work from the inside as well as the outside.

Let the truth be told!!

January 4th, 2007

One of the good things about the Internet is that you can talk to people from all over the world and get honest answers.  People who are talking anonymously are more likely to be truthful.  A recurring theme I am hearing and have been thinking about for some time is the lack of tolerance from within the LGBT community.  How can we expect to make progress and be accepted if we do not even accept or respect each other?

Everywhere you look there is another group popping up.  They claim to be working towards the goal of equal protection under the law for all gay citizens, but what they are really about is helping themselves.  How many of these groups do you know?  Every time they send you something be it email or snail mail they are always asking for money.  How about working for something to help each other out and not help their bottom line?  They all claim to be nonprofit organizations but if they spent the money on actually working towards something rather than supporting staff and creating more ways to ask for money they might actually accomplish something.  These groups are all convinced that they are the most important group you will hear from.  Truth is none of them are very important.  True change comes from grassroots and not from large pseudo nonprofits.  If they were to be truthful becoming nonprofit actually limits their ability to stand for principles, it is just a scheme to raise more money.

These groups mean well or do they?  I think they just mean well for themselves and screw everyone else along the way.  They are unable and unwilling to actually work together to accomplish anything meaningful.  They and their egos all think that they are better than everyone else and that they have the answers.  The Truth is no one group or person has all the answers and is any better than any other.  If they could learn to work together instead of trying to stab each other in the back or ignore those that do not conform then actual progress could be made.  The gay community is a broad spectrum of views and beliefs and is often uncooperative with those that do not tow the line and fall in behind.  They do not respect each other.  Respect is the true key to building a successful working relationship.

The bottom line is that we are divided as a country between gay and straight.  Why do we then create division in the gay community?  Even that term is false, the gay population is not a community it is a bunch of little groups that are so divided that they cannot even agree on most things.  I wish people would stop getting offended and start getting pissed off and channel their energy where it can do some good.  We use the term LGBT to describe ourselves.  What happened to Gay?  We use to all be gay, but now everyone has gotten so politically correct.  Every time you turn around there is another letter being added to LGBT.  Do we need to confuse the straight people more than they already are?  Heterosexual (straight) people do not have to add initials and letters to their description to know who they are talking about why should we?  Another way we divide ourselves is in our bars and social gatherings.  There use to be gay bars but now everyone has to have their own bar or social group.

We could go on and on about how we are divided but we will leave it here for now.  If we go any further we might offend some people.  So if you are offended, too bad.  Stop getting offended and get pissed off and channel your energy constructively and get involved in the fight for equality.
